Common Abnormal Noise Troubleshooting & Maintenance for Construction Machinery Diesel Engines

2026-07-03

Diesel engines serve as the core power unit for all types of heavy construction equipment. Working long hours under heavy loads in muddy, dusty and extreme temperature construction sites, engines easily produce various abnormal noises. Most operators ignore these subtle sound warnings, which gradually trigger power loss, excessive fuel consumption, cylinder damage and sudden shutdowns. Unexpected engine breakdowns delay construction schedules and bring expensive overhaul costs. It is essential to identify different abnormal sounds, locate hidden mechanical faults early, and take targeted repair measures to restore normal engine performance.

There are three main categories of abnormal engine noises with clear distinguishing features and corresponding failure causes. Metallic tapping knocks from cylinders usually stem from worn pistons, clogged fuel injectors or incorrect fuel injection timing. Continuous rattling from the valve cover comes from oversized valve clearance and worn valve transmission parts. Low-frequency grinding or sharp squealing noises originate from timing gear wear and aging fan belts respectively. Operators can quickly narrow down fault positions by cutting single-cylinder fuel supply, removing the valve chamber cover or checking belt tightness during idle and acceleration states.

Standard daily maintenance is the most effective way to prevent recurring engine noise faults. Follow fixed cycles to replace engine oil, oil filters and fuel filters to ensure sufficient lubrication and block impurity abrasion on internal parts. Carry out simple sound and component inspections before daily startup, and avoid violent cold start acceleration and prolonged idle operation. Timely handling minor wear signals can greatly extend the engine’s service life and cut long-term equipment maintenance expenses for construction fleets.
